YES! Fest - Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is YES! Fest?

YES! Fest is a volunteer-led community event based in Canberra to acknowledge the hardship of the 2017 Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey. This was a national survey designed to gauge support for legalising same-sex marriage in Australia. The survey was held via the postal service between 12 September and 7 November 2017. Unlike voting in elections and referendums, which is compulsory in Australia, responding to the survey was voluntary. The survey returned 7,817,247 (61.6%) "Yes" responses and 4,873,987 (38.4%) "No" responses. Canberra had the loudest YES! in the country of 73% thanks to the targeted efforts of Chief Minister Andrew Barr and Jacob White the ACT field director for the marriage equality campaign! YES!Fest is an event that acknowledges the pain inflicted on the Australian LGBTIQA+ community, and the comradery of Canberra saying "YES" to equality and fairness.

To mark this important occasion in Australia's history YES! Fest reclaims the night on Lonsdale Street for a glitter-filled extravaganza on Saturday 14 November 2020 from 3pm to 3am for the third year in a row.

Join us for a family-friendly urban picnic during the afternoon and then an epic street party at night with music, drag performances and much more! Get out your glitter, don a rainbow flag and celebrate the meaning of community, family and love!

Follow our social media accounts to hear announcements as they happen.

If you're keen to donate, sponsor or volunteer - we'd love to hear from you! Email us on yesfestcbr @ and say "YES"!

YES!Fest is led by a handful of volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the year to create a remarkable festival with national and local talent. During the festival, we rely on our community pitching in in many ways, such as stage production, activation, talent support and media. If you'd like to be involved in 2020, do get in touch!

What does volunteering with YES!Fest involve?

YES! Fest has opportunities for everyone and we would love your help with a variety of things. From supporting our talented artists to providing information to attendees, we have something for you! In our volunteer form, you can express preferences for the types of roles you might like. We do ask that you come with an open mind and a can-do attitude! YES! Fest is run by volunteers and we love people who are willing to help out and support their teammates.

Is volunteering with YES!Fest a paid gig?

As YES!Fest is a charity, led by volunteers we rely on the generosity of the community to make this event possible. Whilst we can not pay volunteers, all YES! Fest volunteers will receive some excellent perks like exclusive merchandise, and our love and devotion. You will also have the opportunity to meet with wonderful, like-minded people, and of course, you will have our eternal thanks and love!

Do I have to be Queer* identifying to volunteer?

All queer-identifying folk and allies are welcome to volunteer! This is a community event for everyone to celebrate the anniversary of marriage equality. We value community and diversity and invite anyone that wants to help out on the day to apply to be a volunteer.

I have a disability or need specific assistance, can I still volunteer?

Absolutely! The YES! Fest is committed to celebrating diversity and we will do our very best to find a role that is suitable for you. Please let us know what your needs are so that we can ensure we are in the best position to support you.

I am under 18, can I still volunteer?

We would love to have you involved, but unfortunately due to insurance limitations, we are not able to have volunteers under 18 years old. But we will be working on this for the future so please check back next year! We do hope that you come along to enjoy the day though with your family and friends.

When will I find out if I am a volunteer?

Volunteers will be notified of the outcome in early November. To ensure we have everyone we need we will be asking you to confirm as soon as possible! Volunteers will then receive an information pack prior to Saturday, and a briefing before you commence your shift. We will also ask you to sign our Volunteer Agreement to ensure you are aware of all the relevant information and understand your role at YES! Fest.

What if I have more questions?

If you have any questions please send through an email to the Volunteer Co-ordinator, Alyssa at yesfestcbr @ Please be sure to mention volunteering in the subject line so we can get back to you as soon as possible!

I can not volunteer, but I would like to support in another way - what can I do?
